To tell
the story of Tom’s Hidden Valley Treasures, I first
have to tell you a story about my father Tom Allen. He
came to the Verde Valley in the late 1940’s. Born
and raised in Philadelphia, he loved the west and every
summer visited his grandmother in Colorado Springs. Eventurally
he discovered Arizona, where he liked the warmer weather
and wide open spaces. He worked for Smelter City Ironworks
and for other ranchers building fences, cutting wood, whatever
job he could find. He was building a little cabin at Hidden
Valley Ranch and would go get rocks from nearby areas.
His friends and various acquaintances would come by, admire
his load of rock and possibly buy or trade him for it.
Eventually he got the idea that selling rocks for building
and landscape could be a good business and he started to
gather and stockpile rocks of various kinds.
Later
he established some flagstone mining claims on Casner Mountain
and various other permits for surface rock through the
Forest Service and private property owners. He built a
couple of buildings, purchased a bigger truck and eventually
a hydraulic flagstone splitter.
In the early 1950’s, my father married Ingrid T. Matthews
and in 1953, I came along.
In about 1975, my father incorporated the business and called
it HIdden Valley Enterprises, Inc. He ran this business until
he passed away in October of 2002.
In 2004,
part of the inventory was taken from the original business
and I started an offshoot called Tom’s Hidden Valley
Treasurers LLC. I have a large supply of all sorts of rocks,
minerals, turquoise, finished stone products and one of
a kind jewelry that I make.
I am located 10 miles south of Sedona at Hidden Valley Ranch
in Page Springs.
